Dr. Katia Langton was honored to be presenting at the national AOPA (American Orthotic and Prosthetic Association) assembly this past September 2014. Her presentation; “Preventing the Preventable in the Global Fight Against Diabetic Foot Ulcers and Amputations” is an overview of the burden and impact of the Diabetes pandemic and Peripheral Neuropathy leading to the preventable loss of limbs and lives.
People who have Diabetes are vulnerable to nerve and vascular damage that can result in loss of protective sensation in the feet, poor circulation and poor healing of foot ulcers (an open wound in the foot) and risk of amputation.
One million foot long of amputations globally in Diabetic feet and up to 85% of these are preventable.
