Morton’s toe can cause big problems

It is actually quite common to have a longer second toe (2nd metatarsal bone) than one would think. 20-30% of the population!

What people don’t realize is that this can perpetuate musculoskeletal problems like; back pain, sciatica, piriformis syndrome, and SI joint pain as well as chronic metatarsalgia plantar fasciitis, shin splints, and knee pain.

It does this by changing the biomechanics of gait and the second toe starts to do more of the work in propulsion (propelling the body forward) and the first toe becomes hypermobile and stops engaging in the gait cycle. The big toe has a thicker shaft and stronger muscles supporting it but stops performing its main functions in gait. Often a callus will develop under the second metatarsal head.

At Island Pedorthic FootCare (at Harbour City Chiropractic) our Certified Pedorthists correct this by modifying Custom Orthotics with a Morton’s extension to engage and lengthen the big toe.
This normalizes biomechanics which then decreases stress on the body from the ground up!
